Poker Tips 101 – To Bluff or Not to Bluff?
That is the question.. and the answer is not as simple as you may think. In fact, the decision to bluff should be one that is based on a number of circumstantial factors that will directly affect the outcome of the bluff. Fortunately, all of those factors are discussed below, so you’ll know when to bluff and when not to bluff by the time you are finished reading.
The object of the bluff is to make your opponents believe you have a strong hand, thereby causing them to fold. However, most of the time the bluff does not work this well on more experienced players unless it is being executed by a professional themselves. Your opponent’s playing style will have a huge impact on whether or not your bluff is successful. If your opponent is aggressive then they will probably not fold unless they are sure you have a good hand.
When playing against aggressive players you should never bluff unless you have the chips to back it up. If you don’t then you may be called or even raised by your opponent. If you lose the bet, which you will if no one folds, then you will be out of most of your chips, leaving you in a terrible situation. If you are playing against tight players then you can bluff in certain situations, which will depend on your table position and your hand. If you are confident that your opponents have bad hands, then you may want to pretend to have the highest hand.
